A victory for common sense and a tribute to the opposition parties that listened to landowner concerns.
We need to get this tax issue resolved rather than put on hold until after the election. Your property will still be impacted by the threat that this government clearly want an upfront tax on the sale of land.
Until that issue is resolved someone purchasing land must consider the risk that Brumby will come back and tax them.
While that risk remains your property will be devalued.
The GAIC tax is another greedy tax, the great Australian dream can never be fully achieved with confidence while our Governments take whatever they can through the loop hole of legslation.
This tax issue definitely needs to be resolved before the election. Because there is no moral guilt from governments breaking election promises after election.

How typical of the arrogant, out-of-touch Brumby Government to blindly try to force this legislation through parliament against a tide of opposition from landowners, industry and the community. Can they really be that thick-headed?? Full marks to the opposition parties (Greens, Libs/Nats and DLP) for standing their ground and voting for common sense and a fair go. Let's hope the Victorian public do likewise at the next election and kick this incompetent, money-wasting Brumby-bunch out on their ears!

A great result, however, while this government remains in power the GAIC tax remains a threat to sellers and purchasers. The Labor Party is not only arrogant but it has got the sulks and as a nasty payback will be happy to leave landowners in limbo until after the election. Madden and Brumby are classic narcissists.
Because the Labor Party have refused to negotiate with the Libs first home buyers will be faced with increasing prices for land because of the increasing shortage of land. Madden and Brumby are showing us again how short sighted they are.
But what's going to happen if Labor ever gets a majority in the Upper House as well as the Lower House? They'll ram the GAIC through as their first order of business, won't they?
Congratulations to all those at Taxed Out, to the people with the grit to support them and to the Greens, Libs, Nats and the DLP that showed they do actually care about ordinary Victorians that stood to be ripped off by a Greedy Labor Government.
The battle has been won but not the war. Labor is killing this off as an election issue because it stood to hurt them incredibly as more people became aware of the GAIC truth, leading up to an election. Now is the time to regroup and make every property owner in Victoria know what is at stake if Labor is elected this year.
We can't wait untill the election, to much risk. We must push for the issue to be resolved as a matter of urgency.
It is still a massive cloud over each and every property owner and anyone home buyer in Victoria.
Being in the construction industry, i know first hand how critical land supply is, there is not much left it is that simple.
No one will purchase any land until this is resolved, and your land is still undervalued because of this mess.
We need to push hard and fast on resolution to this matter or we are all stuffed. You thing a bank is not going to take the GAIC into account, think again, this has changed nothing!
Agreed Luke - the continued uncertainty is sure to impact on property values. The Premier said on ABC radio this morning that the bill would be going back to cabinet - so we must keep the pressure on. At least the government has been sent a very clear message that the current model is unacceptable and they need to make major changes if they are to have any hope of getting it passed. A small victory - but as you say "the war is not over".
